This is a portrait of J. C. Theodor Dreier Sr. (s a young boy. He is holding a toy soldier on horseback in his left hand. Oil on canvas. The painting itself measures 17 1/2" x 15" and is displayed in an antique gilt wood frame measuring 20 1/4" x 18 1/4". Unsigned. I also have portraits of Theodor's wife, Dorothea, and his son, Henry Edward, which I am selling separately.
Condition: Craquelure and scattered in-painting. The canvas fits slightly small in the frame, providing a small opening on one side. the frame shows some light losses to the gesso and to the paint around the edges of the frame.
Johann Caspar Theodor Dreier, a successful American businessman, emigrated from Bremen Germany in 1849 and became partner of the English iron firm of Naylor, Benson and Company's New York branch. He married his cousin, Dorothea Dreier in 1864, also from Germany. Their ancestors were civic leaders and merchants and Theodor and his wife, Dorothea, became civic leaders in their own right. They had one son, Henry Edward Dreier, and three daughters, including Katherine Sophie Dreier and Dorothea Adelheid Dreier, both of whom became notable artists in their day. Although he is referenced as Theodor Sr., I couldn't find any record of him having a son named Theodor. His son, Henry Edward, however, did have a son named Theodore.
