A stunning set of four late 19th century Victorian 'Old Saxon Chairs’ England circa 1894, known as the ‘turner chair’ with fabulous linear and figurative carved details and turned and incised decorations overall, the chairs are made from turned oak and hardwood with the top-rail incised with geometric patterns and turned ringed arms on triangular framed seats, the circular legs joined by uneven stretchers, although based on a 17th century design these chairs are surprisingly comfortable, they have a wonderful Arts & Crafts feel about them, without doubt a truly striking set of chairs which make a great statement piece and will be the focal point of any room, reserve now.
Triangular English Chair 1892-1904 made by John Starkey Oak these are reproductions of the celebrated seventeenth century turned chair at Lord Leycester's Hospital in Warwick. Many of these chairs were sold as 'The Old Saxon Chair' by John Starkey, a Warwick cabinet-maker and antique dealer. So great was the interest of the Victorian public and collectors in Tudor and Elizabethan, that a large number of reproductions of early pieces of furniture were made during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in late 16th and early 17th century England, New England and Holland
