This charming lidded milk jug was crafted in Japan sometime in the mid to late 1950s based on the “Made in Japan” stamp underneath. Its quirky cute shape was patterned after milk jugs shapes that were popular in the 19th to early 20th century. A whimsical basket weave motif is seen on the bulbous lower part of the jug, the upper neck and on the perimeter of the lid. It has a sturdy thick tubular attached handle and rests on an elevated base. An identical pattern of a planter full of assorted flowers can be found on both the front and back, very lively! The lid’s handle is that of a miniature rose bud. It measures 7” high with the lid on and 6” without. It is 7” wide with a base diameter of 6”; weight 1 lb. 7 oz.
I took photos with the lid on and the lid off, as it’d be a fabulous vessel to fill with live blooms (water tight) or simply display as a charming accent piece on a shelf or tabletop, lid on or off. Handcrafted from earthenware with a highly glazed finish, the background color is a milky cream hue; “basket weave” is tan; florals are a splash of assorted primary colors. In excellent condition with minimal crazing and zero cracks, only some age spots on the interior and on the underside of the base; unseen unless you lift the lid off and look inside or turn it upside down. I have quite a collection of pitchers, jugs and such and this cutie is one of many I am parting with. Awaiting its new home, might that be yours?
