This elegant and sophisticated oil painting was realized by an underrecognized (but extraordinary) Flemish painter named F.V. Sliches in 1946. Entitled Les Masons (or the masons), this ashcan style portrait depicts Belgian bricklayers in the 1940s practicing their craft. Rendered in quiet earthtones- muted grays, olives and browns- this piece offers a sophisticated palate, as well as a deft handling of the paint. While Sliches painted this work in a realist style, the work also offers a clear artistic perspective, as well as a carefully constructed composition and a striking aesthetic subtlety. With its understated color palate and modern sensibility, this piece would be a winning addition to any style of interior from traditional to contemporary. It is signed F.V. Sliches in the bottom right hand corner and dated 1946. The work comes presented in a original gilded gallery frame. Excellent vintage condition.
