Jane Ellen Murray (born 1927) paints women of intrigue and mystery. Many are from the Art Deco period when sophistication was at the heights. They haunt the memory. They are women you can’t forget.
Jane thinks of her work as sculpting rather than painting because these women are 3-dimensional.
“I want them to be real and bigger than life. And I use wild colors because I want them to dazzle the eye.”
Ever the creative, Jane Ellen poured that energy into her studies at Vassar, receiving the Vogue Prix de Paris award, sponsored by Conde Nast. Post-graduation, she began what would be a meteoric and historic career in advertising. As a Creative Director of J. Walter Thompson, one of the first women to hold said title, Ms. Murray was celebrated by her peers on countless occasions, including winning a prestigious Clio award for the art direction for a Pepsi International Campaign and being named “Advertising Woman of the Year,” by the Women’s Advertising Club of Chicago.
As she transitioned from her groundbreaking career, Jane Ellen discovered a new passion ---painting. After studying at the Palette & Chisel, she was invited to show her work at the Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea, in Florence, Italy. Since then, her work has been shown throughout the country and around the world, including: the Amsterdam Whitney and Broadway galleries in New York City, the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art in Las Vegas, the Gora Gallery in Montreal, the Gallery in Redchurch Street in London and finally, most recently, in the LuminArte Gallery, in Dallas. For her dedication to the form, Ms. Murray has been listed in International Contemporary Master IV. less
