Very early Postmodern, Memphis Milano Framed Abstract Pop Art, Sculptural Wall Mirror, circa 1980. The design is very reminiscent of the lacquered mirror designs of Ettore Sottsass and Alessandro Mendini.
These earlier, handmade, Memphis Sculptural works are hard to find, as many were commissioned and scarce. Creating them was very labor intensive. The wooden design elements were hand cut, painted, and often finished with as many as 10 coats of hand applied lacquer.
Many, like this one, also had various mixed abstract elements integrated into the design.
Although the "Postmodern or Memphis" era includes a very varied array of styles and designs, the earlier pieces from Italy, focused on fun and whimsy, incorporated bright bold colors, never before seen uses of materials, like metals, and geometric designs conceptually reimagined and brilliantly re purposed cr to create almost cartoonish creations of every day objects
Designs were oversized, grand scale re-interpretations of asymmetrical forms. There emphasis was on fun and whimsy, the use of bold colors,. layered mixed media and abstract elements.
