The piece was made of lacquered wood in a deep brown color with surface Maki-e decoration that mostly consists of several family crests (mon): Ichizyou-huzi (one string wisteria). The ewer was nicely fitted with bronze metal mouth sprout, a top knob on the lid, and a ring around its base, with some displaying elaborate chased scrolling design. These are not mere adornment, as they help to prolong the use of a functional piece, which that was likely reserved by the family for special occasions or ceremonies. The surface that was exposed to the light has developed a mellow brown patina due the long time the lacquer was exposed to the light. The piece is likely dated to 19th century, possibly earlier. An example of the ewer dated to the Muromachi Period, 16th century, with similar bronze fittings and different Maki-e decoration is illustrated on page 218-219 of East Asia Lacquer The Florence and Herbert Irving Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. less
