This Steve Miller, 'Oak Bowl with Burned Foot', Hand Turned Wooden Bowl, features a craved wood 'stem' foot that is painted with acrylic paints.
Due to the finish, this piece is not suitable for moist objects like fruit.
Steve Miller is an award winning wood-turner with pieces collected in private homes, commercial spaces and public institutions.
"I have been a wood-turner since 1998, specializing in highly carved, textured, and colored wood vessels. When first observed, my pieces often appear to be ceramic or glass."
His skill level is readily apparent in the thinness and size of his bowls. During the turning process, there is a greater probability of a piece shattering as the walls become thinner. Creating large, thin-walled pieces has a higher failure rate because of the centrifugal force.
A wood-turner since 1998, the artist is inspired by the natural world around him, both on land and under the sea. Miller treats each of his turned pieces as blank, three dimensional canvasses.
Miller has trained with some of the best wood artists in the world today. His biggest influence is his former Arrowmont School instructor Jacques Vesery, who taught Miller many new techniques in 2016; followed by John Paul Fennell in 2019. Their artistic vision and direction is the driving force in his ever-evolving creative process.
Steve says, “Although I do dabble in furniture making for friends and family, and it is satisfying, it does not inspire me like artistic turning, probably because the finished work is too predictable!”
