Made in Japan. One-of-a-kind collectible art piece.
This porcelain bottle is glazed with metallic gold on the lower half and then reduction fired to carbonization at the artist's own wood-burning climbing kiln (Nobori-gama).
With this bottle, a glint of gold is visible through the scorched surface, and shimmers with nuance. This sophisticated juxtaposition is the artist's strong feature reflecting the very Japanese aesthetics.
Reduction firing is a specialised firing technique not commonly practiced or easily managed, with the likeliness of seeing unpredicted results.
The supply of oxygen is carefully controlled and "reduced" to obtain this volcanic effect.
It is often done by placing pots in a frame filled with dried plants husk and charcoal. The husk stuck on the ceramic surface would help create volcanic texture.

About the Artist:
Fukumura Ryuta is an up-and-coming ceramic artist based in Kyushu, southern Japan. As the second generation potter from Nichigetsu Gama, a family owned studio/gallery, he draws from the area's rich heritage as well as creating his own style with a contemporary edge.
Fukumura crafts functional porcelain ware with otherworldly rustic textures, which can be referred to as wabi-sabi as a distinctive element in the Japanese philosophy. A recent throwing residence in New York had a large influence on him and is well reflected in his series of pieces with metallic overglaze. less
