Created in China during the 18th century, this terracotta sculpture showcases a dog depicted in a seated position, his tail nicely tucked behind. Referred to as a Mingqi, this terracotta dog was likely a funerary object buried with the deceased. Ancient Chinese believed dogs were able to protect them from evil and help them enjoy a peaceful afterlife. Presenting a nicely weathered patina with mineral deposits on the surface and traces of original pigmentation, this 18th century Qing dynasty terracotta dog Mingqi will make for an excellent decorative addition to any home, perhaps displayed atop a console table, commode or credenza.
