A stunning and most unusual Empire period flame mahogany game table. American, likely New York, circa 1830s/1840s
Exquisitely hand-crafted in the early/mid-19th century, originating in the north eastern coast of the United States, likely New York, finished in sophisticated Classical taste with nods to early English Victorian, this fine quality pre-civil war antique features a two column lyre and heart shaped central pedestal, supporting the solid mahogany hinged flip top that opens to reveal open storage compartment and pivots to double in size becoming a square tabletop, rich mahogany coloring and antique glow, warm hues and superb grain detail, accented by the original patinated brass hardware, over ogee molding frieze finished in handsome book-matched flame mahogany, unique undulating scalloped apron, atop bold open harp plinth base, rising on four shaped French bracket feet. Beautiful patina over the whole.
What we love about this table is that it is three pieces of furniture all in one: You can leave it closed and push it against a wall as a console table, you can flip up the top and use it as a backdrop to display a vase, lamp, or interesting decorative arts, or you can flip up the top, spin it around and open the extension to use it as a games / card table, centre table or side table. Flexible, it could also be placed against the back or end of a sofa, used as a parlor lamp stand or placed in the foyer as a visually striking entry statement piece!
