The origin of Taylor Tile is much that a story of a young entrepreneur who came to Los Angeles in search of business opportunity. Frank M. Taylor began his career by scouting Los Angeles county for “good clay” and settled on Santa Monica Where the deposits already hosted several clay product facilities, including Los Angeles pressed brick (later Gladding McBean), Western Brick, Simons Brick, and Pacific Clay Products. Taylor purchased 10 unimproved acres for the factory and office bounded by the Pacific electric tracks. Sixty men were employed by 1927 with a plant capacity of 75,000 bricks per day. They were selling so much break that they couldn’t make it fast enough. Additional products were added including mission style roofing tile, fancy clay wall vents, decorated glaze tile, large garden pottery and chimney pots to ornament the Spanish style houses in vogue at that time.
Most of the decorative tile work and especially the tile panel installations were custom designs, based on architects’ sketches. Designs were primarily raised-line (Cuenca), largely styled geometrics in bright colors. By 1930 the company continued producing decorative tile to the door and the custom homes of celebrity such as Rudolph Valentino and Gracie fields.
The six tiles That you see in this mural is called the “Spanish Trovador” and is set into a contemporary frame. These tiles each measure 6 x 6” and can be removed and either placed into a table or set into a wall or fountain. The scene is very romantic featuring a Spaniard enticing his lover to a song with his guitar.
This tile mural can be sold with or without the frame, I added photos of both. less
