Making of Washi is a long process: Bark of kozo, bamboo, rice or wheat are soaked in clean water, boiled to thicken, and then beaten and filtered through a gridiron and dried in sheets in sunlight for a natural soft finish.
Sumi-ink made from ash of pine tree, and Gansai which is used for traditional cosmetic face make-up, are now used as water-color for the special Japanese art. The note in Japanese on this piece reads "Can you hear the sound of breaking waves?". less
