Born in Teaneck, New Jersey in 1950, landscape artist David Kessler received his Bachelor of Arts from Arizona State University and his graduate degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. Noted for his exquisite use of light and a loving attention to detail, the work of Kessler follows a long tradition of American landscape painting. Brilliant color is used to highlight forms creating depth and movement in his romantic landscape imagery. Furthermore, his use of atmospheric perspective echoes techniques favored in the Italian Renaissance as well as in more recent 20th century landscape traditions.
David is a contemporary abstract painter, workshop instructor, author of the book “Bigger, Faster, Fresher, Looser Abstract Painting Workbook,” and founder of Abstract Painting Academy and Visual Arts Business Academy. David has always favored a loose, colorful approach to painting and his work is inspired by both his love of color and the world around him: the sights and sounds of the city, the quiet stillness of the forest, the beauty of the landscape, the change of seasons, the rhythmic pounding of the ocean. He has the ability to take his emotional responses to these stimuli and transfer them to canvas utilizing an approach born from his love of design.
David spent 28 years practicing architecture after receiving his architecture degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His painting career developed simultaneously with his architecture career. It became clear to David that his love and passion for teaching others far outweighed his love of architecture, so he gave up designing buildings and hit the road as a workshop instructor. His Bigger, Faster, Fresher, Looser Workshops have been taught from coast to coast.
David’s award winning paintings are housed in corporate and institutional collections in North Carolina and private collections worldwide. He works from his studio in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. less
