Antique hand colored lithograph artwork "Barrow's Duck. Clangula Barrovii: (Swains & Rich)" by John and Elizabeth Gould. We are very glad to announce we have some of these rare and beautiful pieces for sale! We will be listing others from this set - so check out shop if you want different pieces from this same artist. This first addition, hand colored lithograph comes from the first addition, plate #380 of "The birds of Europe" and features a lovely scene of a single Barrow's Duck floating gracefully in water. The artwork is on rag paper and has been professionally matted and framed. The artist captures every detail from the plumage, to the flora. This series took the artist 12 years to complete! The famed artist John Gould (1804-1881) completed this piece in the 1830's. The original book is on display at the Smithsonian. This original lithograph piece was drawn on stone and hand painted. You can see the artists signature hiding in the lower left hand corner of the water. It would be magnificent on any wall! It can be hung via the universal metal wire on the back. The frame is hand caved solid wood with a beautiful distressed gold paint finish. The matting is mostly white with a small dark brown accent. The wording a the bottom of the artwork reads from left to right: ""Drawn from Nature & on stone by J & E Gould" "Barrow's Duck. Clangula Barrovii: (Swains & Rich)" "Printed by C. Hullmandel"
Here is an exert written by the artist about this specific piece!
"BARROWS DUCK. Clangula Barrovii, Swains, and Rich. A fine male of this rare and beautiful species having been shot in Iceland by T. C. Atkinson, Esq. of New-castle-upon-Tyne, when on a visit to that country, about two years since, we have much pleasure in figuring it as an occasional inhabitant of the European portion of the globe. Mr. Atkinsons specimen is now depo-sited in the Museum of the Newcastle Natural History Society. Although very nearly allied to the GoldenEye (Clangula vulgaris), it possesses, nevertheless, many characters by which it may be distinguished from that species. For our first knowledge of the Clangula Barrovii we are indebted to that highly interesting work the Fauna Boreali-Americana of Messrs. Swainson and Richardson ; and as the observations of the latter gentleman were taken on the spot, we cannot do better than extract what he has recorded in the work above mentioned. Notwithstanding, says Dr. Richardson, the general similarity in the form and markings"
