Antique hand colored lithograph artwork "Petrophassa Albipennis: Gould" by J. Gould and H.C. Richter. We are very glad to announce we have some of these rare and beautiful pieces for sale! We will be listing others from this set - so check out shop if you want different pieces from this same artist. This first addition, hand colored lithograph comes from the first addition, volume 5 of "The Birds of Australia" and features a lovely scene of two "Petrophassa Albipennis" AKA white-quilled rock pigeons. The artwork is on rag paper and has been professionally matted and framed. The scene depicted is a male and female white-quilled rock pigeon in their natural environment with exquisite details throughout. The artist captures every detail from the plumage, to the landscape. This series took the artist 12 years to complete! The famed artist's involved in the making were: John Gould (1804-1881) and Henry Richter (1772-1857) . This piece was created in the late 1800s. It would be magnificent on any wall! It can be hung via the universal metal wire on the back. The frame is hand caved solid wood with a beautiful gold paint finish. The matting is mostly white with a small dark brown accent. The wording a the bottom of the artwork reads from left to right: "J. Gould and H.C. Richter del et lith" "Petrophassa Albipennis: Gould" "C. Hullmandel Imp."
Here is an exert written by the men about this specific piece!
"This highly singular species of Pigeon is an inhabitant of the most rugged, rocky and sterile districts of the north-west coast of Australia. The specimens in my possession were sent me by the Officers of the Beagle, but, I regret to say , were unaccompanied by any particulars respecting their history. The form of the wing would lead us to imagine that in many parts of its economy this species much resembles those of the members of the genus Geophaps; but on these points nothing can be ascertained with certainty, until the productions of those remote parts of Australia have been carefully investigated, a period which, from the inhospitable character of the country, I fear is far distant. Crown of the head and neck greyish brown, margined with sandy brown; all the upper surface, chest and tail rufous brown, the centre of each feather inclining to grey; lores black; abdomen and under tail-coverts chocolate brown; throat clothed with small feathers white at the tip, black at the base; primaries dark brown at their tips, the basal half pure white; bill and irides blackish brown; feet reddish browns. The plate represents a male and female of the natural size."
