Gorgeous 1960s abstract expressionist tempera on masonite painting by listed artist William Georgenes, (1929-2017), in vibrant colors of red and pinks. Painting is housed in it's original hand-crafted period wood frame. Titled, "Forms from Lindos in a Bright Red Light," signed and dated on verso.
William Georgenes was born July 15, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was educated at the Mass School of Art (BFA, 1953) and Yale University (MFA, 1961) where he studied with James Brooks and Josef Alvers. His awards are many: first prize in 1953 at the Nantucket Art Association; first prize in 1956 at the Jordan Marsh Contemporary Painting show; second prize for graphics in 1957 at the Boston Arts Festival; the Blanche Coleman Award in 1967. He is the recipient of two SUNY Research Foundation Grants and Fellowships (1975, 1976) and is represented in the State Street Bank Collection, Rutgers University and Brandeis Collections and the Cheekwood Museum of Fine Arts, TN. He has been given many one-man shows including those at the Gallery NAGA, Kanegis Gallery (1955, 1956, 1960s), Brandeis University (1956, 1967, ca.1975), DeCordova Museum (1957), Siembab Gallery, Boston (1958, 1960, 1962), Shore Galleries, Boston (1965, 1968), Contemporaries Gallery, NYC (1966), Our Gallery, Los Angeles (1970), Paideia Gallery, Los Angeles (1971), Squeri Gallery, Buffalo, NY (1975), Atelier Gallery, Boston (1979). He has taught at the DeCordova Museum (1958), Boston State Teachers College (1958), Vesper George School of Art (1955-59, 1961-62), Worcester Museum School (1961), Harvard University (1965-66), Niagara Community College Workshop (1974), SUNY College, Buffalo, NY (1973-1978), Instituo de Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (1979). Georgenes also worked as an art restorer, repairing Rembrandts and Monets at the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA. less
