- Jean Cuillerat was born in Paris on December 8, 1927. He was raised in a farming family and in 1944 … more Jean Cuillerat was born in Paris on December 8, 1927. He was raised in a farming family and in 1944 at 17 lost his hand in a threshing machine. The young Cuillerat had his first exhibition in 1949 at 22 and later studied at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris from 1955 to 1960. He was primarily influenced by the Surrealist movement of the 1930s and 40s and Abstract Expressionism that dominated in the 1950s. Throughout his career Jean Cuillerat had numerous solo shows in Paris. In 1950 he exhibited at Cimaise Gallery in Paris specializing in abstract painting and in 1970 was represented by Jacques Casanova Gallery in the Palais-Royal who specialized in International art and artists.
