Laura Hoernig was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1872. She lived at 22 West 58th Street in Kansas City during the 1920's.
Hoernig studied and sometimes traveled with artist George Sass. Like fellow Kansas City artist Daniel MacMorris (1893-1981), it is thought Sass encouraged Miss Hoernig to travel to Taos, N.M. It was the landscape, pueblos, and colors of Taos that influenced her painting for the rest of her career. It is known that Hoernig had travel to Taos by at least 1923 and made frequent trips there through the 1930's or later.
Laura Hoernig attended the Kansas City Art Institute in 1926 where she studied painting. She was a Painter-Member of the Kansas City Society of Artists in the 1930's. It is known Hoernig exhibited at the Kansas City Art Institute Midwestern Art Show in 1927 and 1932. She also exhibited at the 4th and 5th Country Club Plaza Art Fairs in 1935 and 1936. She probably exhibited in many other Kansas City art exhibitions during the 1920's and onward.
Laura Hoernig died in 1957 in Kansas City, Mo. and is buried at the Elmwood Cemetery. less
