Superb quality of materials and design, following the French tradition. The gilt finish on the brass sconce backs is in “okay” condition, and coordinates wonderfully with the bright red-orange on the shades. As you might know, photography is far more unkind in revealing condition “issues” than the naked eye. These sconce backs, insofar as their finish goes, easily pass my “authentic antiques” test.
The shades are signed and flawless. The exceptional quality of the glass is immediately apparent, the color combination striking.
The wiring, which is original, is in perfect condition. I’m one who believes “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” And, to that end I’ve also left the original French sockets installed. This will require your using bayonet-mounting bulbs, which are readily available in a variety of sizes and wattages, in American 110 voltage. Just click around and you’ll find them quickly and easily. It’s really quite difficult and time-consuming to change out the French sockets to American, and the American sockets (for reasons I won’t belabor you with) must be candelabra size, which limits the wattage to 60 per sconce. You can use any size or wattage bulb you want with these bayonet-mounting sockets. HOWEVER: Accompanying your purchase will be 2 adapters which, when inserted into the bayonet sockets, allow the use of American candelabra-based bulbs, which you can get at any hardware store. So, if you're uncomfortable about acquiring or using bayonet-mounting bulbs, that's just been resolved for you!
Measurements: Projecting about 9 ½ inches from the wall. Top to bottom, 6 ½. The shades are 5 ¼ inches wide. The backs are 3 inches wide at the top, tapering down. In standard French fashion, there is a bar across the back of each sconce which will allow you to hook them onto whatever device you install for holding them up. This is not rocket science. less
