Artist Statement:
"I would describe my work as a confluence of abstract styles and painting methods that explore the temporality of representation. What I mean is that historically speaking, art in general - and in my case abstract art - has been a marker of time and place; an encapsulation of the ideas that are circulating and social concerns, both philosophically and politically. In Post-War abstract expressionism there was a push toward a non-verbal communication - a more instinctual communication that happened between viewer and object. This relationship calls to be present in the moment. I've thought a lot about those ideas in relation to my work and the world we now live in with incredible technologies as we manage multiple identities simultaneously. So being "present" takes on new meaning and understanding where our online presence is at times, which is as real as our physical reality. With these ideas in mind, I created paintings that combine the contemporary with the historical and they act physically as though they are mediated, despite being handmade and physically occupy the same space with the viewer."
Chris Trueman received Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in both Painting and Digital Media from San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA; and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA. His explorative process produces works that combine coexistent traditions in abstract painting and reveal tensions between genres.
Trueman explores the temporality of representation through abstraction by constructing new systems and modes in which the material of painting converges with the visual aesthetic of digital and photographic imagery, discovering the possibilities of paint’s articulation of space, surface, time, and image. His most recent work is painted on large-scale Yupo, a synthetic paper that is then mounted on Sintra. The unique interaction of the smooth Yupo surface and acrylic paint, both sprayed on and applied with a brush and squeegee, allows for marks and forms to function as either positive or negative space. This back-and-forth relationship of positive and negative reverses the norm of gestural painting by presenting the gestural mark and its inversion within the same space. While the mark is a record of movement or idea, the negative gesture forms a transparent boundary between previous and subsequent layers.
Trueman has had solo exhibitions at Edward Cella Art + Architecture, Los Angeles, CA; Andrewshire Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; TWFINEART, Brisbane, Australia; Visual Artists Group, Los Angeles; White Box Contemporary, San Diego, CA; Adah Rose Gallery, Kensington, MD; Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA; and Autonomie Projects, Los Angeles, CA. Group exhibitions include Bruno David Gallery, Saint Louis; Bentley Gallery, Phoenix; Read Contemporary, Dallas, TX; Santa Ana College, Santa Ana, CA; Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA; Irvine Fine Arts Center, Irvine, CA; Central Utah Art Center, Ephraim, UT; and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA.
