Antique Suzani from Samarkand, circa 1900s.
“Suzani” derives from the Persian word "suzan" for "needle" and refers to bright silk embroidered wall hangings and bedspreads that adorned homes of people on festive occasions. Suzanis are practical yet decorative items that took months for 1-2 individuals to make. There are variations in the shade of the silk thread used to embroider this, as is commonly seen in older suzanis that were made for personal use in people’s homes.
Silk embroidery on a cotton base.
While this suzani is in wonderful condition, there are small stains and signs of wear on this suzani, that are expected in items of this age.
