British artist Hogan Brown excels in presenting mysterious, atmospheric, and not quite settled backdrops to his work.

One example is The Diner, a reminder of mid-20th century diner culture. The man is alone, waiting. There is no one else around; there is virtually nothing on the table. The sharp shafts of shadow refer to some sort of danger or jeopardy awaiting the man. The atmosphere seems similar to Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks.
