Antique Blackwood or Hongmu wood pedestal or plant stand or a tiered side table. Complex pierced link style carving accents all four sides of the apron under the inset beige/pink marble top.
Very dark brown in colour with ornate scrolls and foliage carved on all four sides. This square topped table is all wood construction - no nails were used.
The stand has a total of two shelves and the piece rests on paw style feet.
Being blackwood, this is heavy. The wood is known as black gold, this was much prized by the Chinese.. This could also be used as a display stand or little table as well. A very useful as well as classically beautiful Chinese piece of furniture.
First to Second Quarter 20th. Century. Late Qing. Weight 20lbs approx.
Listed by East2West Furniture, Florida.
*Note wood was oiled prior to photographing.
*Hongmu can be distinguished from other types of rosewoods by its' weight. It is heavy and there's no mistaking this fact.
The wood is Hongmu or Blackwood, superior to regular Rosewood - known to the Chinese as Black Gold or 'Suanzhi'. This appears during the middle Qing period—its literal meaning, 'sourwood' describes the pungent odor emitted when it is worked. Most of the dark heavily carved Qing period furniture is made from Hongmu.
Such pieces are increasingly sought after these days by collectors. less
