A superbly carved and detailed 19th century diminutive lacquered screen panels featuring Japanese (or chinoiserie) relief design of Geishas with umbrellas in mother-of-pearl on a black lacquer background surrounded by paint decorated cherry blossoms on a red lacquered background within a heavily carved floral, branch and leaf frame with wood inserts depicting flanking eagles. Cherry blossom trees on verso. The screen is in a style known as Yokohama or Hamamono and dates to 19th century. Although a few stones have not survived, the splendor and artistic merit of this densely ornamented piece is still quite evident.
