Is it possible to paint an abstract Classical picture? If so then this superb piece must surely be it. In the portrait of her head Sappho almost appears as a negative image, much like the Turin Shroud, while behind her head there is a web of Mediterranean colour representing her frame of mind . There are many questions arising from this thoughtful depiction based on the apocryphal story of Sappho plunging to her doom from the sheer cliffs of Lefkada. Monks performed this act as a leap of faith, Sappho is said to have done it for love and died in the attempt. Use of pigments are key to this painting and its interpretation can perforce only be personal.
Artist Biography:
Sax Berlin (1953), arguably the finest exponent of 21st Century Classicism has devoted his life to absorbing the culture of art and architecture in Europe, Asia & North America. The President of the Asia Society on Park Avenue, NYC wrote to Berlin that "your work is beautiful" and Bernard Faure, Professor of Asia Studies at Columbia University wrote "your icons really do have a life of their own".
