Pierrot, named here not as the archetypal white faced pantomime character who loses his love to Harlequin, but as a more proud personage redolent of Darius, the great Persian king, maybe one of his regional governors. This strong faced character is so wonderfully portrayed in this oil painting that it could almost be a fresco lifted from an ancient temple, both in technique and rendering. This is one of Berlins series of Fools painted in the 1990's.
Artist Biography:
Sax Berlin (1953), arguably the finest exponent of 21st Century Classicism has devoted his life to absorbing the culture of art and architecture in Europe, Asia & North America. Thus becoming a genius of our time and the great secret of modern art. His contemporaries and collectors call him "The Master". When one reviews his oeuvre 8 distinct & separate styles emerge, displaying Berlin?s mastery of his subject; only Picasso has shown this level of genius. Berlin is a unique artist, using techniques mastered during his studies; ranging from antiquity through the medieval and Renaissance to the present; he creates the visual outcomes he wants and that delight collectors. The pieces Berlin has created in his New York, Greek and Cornish studios are of museum quality and are rarely seen in Art Sales offering a combination of beautiful artworks and investment opportunities. Harvard University refer to him as a Master Artist and use his Buddhist Icon works as exemplars of the form in their Religious Studies degree courses. The President of the Asia Society on Park Avenue, NYC wrote to Berlin that "your work is beautiful" and Bernard Faure, Professor of Asia Studies at Columbia University wrote "your icons really do have a life of their own". Sax Berlin is a modern Master Painter in the truest sense of the term and follows in the footsteps of the Great Masters of the past. less
