Beautiful Chinese Nyonya Straits export porcelain in the Peranakan taste. Rare lobed body painted in rich colourful enamels with a wrap-around scene depicting the traditional phoenix and peony design on a white background. The rich floral & scrolled design borders are painted against a purple blue background.
The Nyonya Straits Chinese people originally came from China and settled in Singapore around the 1500's bringing their own culture with them.
The Peranakans are also sometimes referred to as the Straits Chinese or Straits-born Chinese.
This piece was originally meant to be a vase. It was converted into a lamp at some point and then de-lamped. Now It could be used as a vase for dried floral arrangements or converted back into a lamp.
Markings: "CHINA" stamped in overglaze red on underside.
Age: Circa 1920s.
Acquired from a collector of fine Chinese porcelains who has amassed such over the last 40 years. Listed by East2West Furniture.
Dimensions: 11 1/2" tall x 6" diameter at widest point.
Nyonya Baba or Peranakan people are descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay Archipelago back in the 15th century. Generally used to define the Straits-born Chinese to differentiate Chinese people who are born in China or in the Malay Archipelago.
Straits-Chinese were defined as those born or living in the Straits Settlements: a British colonial construct of Penang, Malacca and Singapore constituted in 1826. Straits Chinese were not considered Baba Nyonya unless they displayed certain Sino-Malay syncretic attributes, in terms of attire worn, food, spoken language, choice of education, preferred career choices, choice of religion and loyalties.

- Upon inspection, If you decide not to move forward with the purchase, you or your agent must refuse the item at the time of pickup/delivery from the seller
