The statue was cast in section with the main figures inserted onto the throne. Yamantaka, also known as Vajrabhairava, is the wrathful manifestation of Manjusri (Yamantaka means 'terminator of Yama, the god of death). He is shown here holding a double-edged sword, embracing his consort Vajravetali who holds a skull cup and a Vajra chopper. Yamantaka is popular within the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism as a symbol of defeating death. See less
