These two chromolithographs (stone lithographs printed in colors) were printed in the early 1900s (each is dated on the upper … more These two chromolithographs (stone lithographs printed in colors) were printed in the early 1900s (each is dated on the upper left). They depict varieties of apples and were beautifully printed by Julius Bien Co. One is signed in the plate by the artist. Each color was carefully printed laying in one color at a time. Care had to be taken that the stones and the paper were lined up exactly to prevent unwanted lines and shadows. The printer also had to know how the colors would combine to achieve the desired result. Beautiful in its composition and style, prints from this work are highly decorative and as such are becoming quite rare. Over 100 years old, they are in very good condition. Blank on verso.
