This is a gorgeous and rare French Majolica half wreath. It features a cluster of roses, anemone, and pansies.. . … more This is a gorgeous and rare French Majolica half wreath. It features a cluster of roses, anemone, and pansies.. . each approximately 5" across, and in colors of deep rose and purple surrounded by green majolica leaves. All are attached to a brown glazed Majolica clay mound base which forms a slightly raised arch, and is hollow on the underside. It rests at a slight angle so that all of the wonderful detailing can be seen.

The weather is very inclement during the winters in France, and pieces such as there were most often used on a grave or monument rather than real flowers.

Beautiful for any room of your French Country, Cottage, or Shabby Chic home, and gorgeous for a garden room, or small garden.

~ CONDITION: Given the fact that it has been outside on the ground for almost 100 years, I think it is gorgeous and amazing! As you can see from the photos, due to its age and outside use, there are the normal chips to petals and leaves, and there are some broken or missing leaves under the flower petals. See last photo which shows breakage under the petals, which is not seen when viewing normally. All to be expected.. . and with that said, none of this, for me, takes away from the overall viewing beauty. Be sure to view all photos and judge for yourself!

I spent a great deal of time cleaning out 100+ years of moss, dirt, and lichen, but you might still find a little here and there!

It is such a rarity and true find to come across one of these beautiful pieces. Cemetery plots in France were leased for 99 years. At the end of that time, if there was no one to renew the lease, beautiful pieces such as this were removed, and generally turned over to a broker to be sold off.

I recently saw a trade catalog issued by Hte. Boulenger & Cie, dating 1920, and illustrating some of the beautiful porcelain wreaths and crosses that were available from the company. Price for catalog.. . $275.00.
