Marcel Bouraine was one of France's preeminent, most prolific sculptors during the Art Deco period. Reconstituted stone "Awakening" after Marcel Bouraine champions the female form in a delicate, respectful way; it thereby stands apart, as an homage to women, from many of the more dramatic depictions of the day, which for example showed women balancing firebrands or in extreme dance poses. Bouraine also pays homage to women's liberation by his rendering of the short hairdo. With cast Bouraine signature on the base.
