An important pair of French Napoleon III 6-light candelabras/candelabrum by celebrated French artist Henri, Picard (1831-1864). Modelled as bronze putti (cherubs / angels) with wreaths of grape leaves and blossoms.
Each putto sits on a golden ormolu rock formation and supports a bronze ormolu six arm candelabra/candelabrum with grape leaf drip trays below the capitals and foliate nozzles.
The base is carved from flawless white Carrara marble draped with exquistie ormolu garlands and ribbons of gold. The gilt work is outstanding as expected. The whole sits on four ormolu bun feet. It is the stunning white Carrara marble that sets this pair apart from many.
Henri Picard was a prestigious 19th Century fondeur and doreur, who worked in Paris between the years of 1831 and 1864. Picard was celebrated for casting and gilding decorative objects to a very high quality of production.
Picard worked for the firm Defreville, in addition to collaborating with contemporary designers such as Charles Perrault and Grault. While the craftsman was commissioned by many important patrons, Picard’s most notable achievement was to supply the Emperor Napoleon III with decorative objects, several of which are still in the State Apartment of the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
