Museum Quality Framed with archival glass.
Arthur Burgess studied art in Sydney, Australia. In 1901 he settled in England where he continued his studies in St Ives, Cornwall, finally settling in London.
He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, London from 1904 and worked as an illustrator for The Graphic and the Illustrated London News. Burgess was appointed the official naval artist for the Commonwealth of Australia in 1918 and went on to become the art editor of Brassey’s Naval and Shipping Annual from 1922 to 1930. The British Tourist and Holidays Board was established in 1947 to “‘foster and develop the tourist, catering and holiday services’...hence "come Yachting to Britain". This was just in time for the 1948 Olympic Games to be held in Britain. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics and the 1932 Summer Olympics.
Burgess specialized in maritime art, both during peacetime and war, and is noted for his paintings of naval and commercial shipping ranging from battleships at sea through to barges on the Thames. Examples of his work can be found at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and art galleries in New South Wales, Australia.
Arthur James Wetherall Burgess's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging up $12,488 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork.
