Artist Biography
(Born 1928)
Barbara Moment is active/lives in New York.
Barbara Moment is known for naive animal, landscape, religious.
Born in rural Easton, Pennsylvania in 1928 and growing up surrounded by chickens, cows, and other domesticated animals,
She has developed into one of the most innovative folk painters. Her oil paintings often feature a decorative border of livestock. Her works are usually of sheep, pigs, or cows, but they are set in landscapes filled with a Rousseau-like mystery. A ram watches as a line of ewes passes behind him against a background of dark and brooding trees while overhead the moon rises against a black sky; set far back in the woods is a monument in the form of yet another ewe. In another painting, two merino sheep pause in an otherwise strangely empty landscape. All is shades of green, and a pestilential sun glows down from above. These are not just pretty paintings of lovely animals. The animals have character and perceptible intentions, "not always the best of intentions" Barbara Moment lives in South Nyack, New York, with her painter husband. Originally a writer who liked to paint, the unexpected sale at a local art show of one of her works led her to become in recent years an artist who likes to write. She works in the family dining room on a fairly regular schedule and now prefers acrylics on canvas or wood, though at an earlier stage she worked in oils. Her animal paintings reflect not only her love of animals and her experience with them but also keen observation of the woodcuts and lithographs of domestic stock used to illustrate 19th and early 20th century farm manuals and almanacs. Moment’s paintings were exhibited as part of the Folk, Fantasy & Expressionism show at the Silvermine Guild Center for the Arts, New Canaan, Connecticut, and have also been shown at the Mulvane Art Center, Topeka, Kansas, and at special exhibitions at Bloomingdale’s, New York, and Marshall Field, Chicago. House Beautiful and American Home magazines have both featured her work.
