This hand carved sculpture captures the strength and ferocity of the Bald Eagle, qualities that caused America’s founders to select it as the nation’s symbol.
Found in upstate New York, near the Adirondack Mountains, it has some qualities of Adirondack carvings of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, it is more finely crafted than most such pieces. For instance, the extraordinarily detailed feathers, particularly the feathers on the main body and wings which are intricately picked out in feather-like brush work, are reminiscent of repetitive detailing in some Folk Art carvings and painted furniture. The large head and large yellow beak, the piercing eyes (possibly made of tiny nails), and the carefully rendered yellow and black talons display the skills of a master carver.
The sculpture rests on a base of heavy, dark wood, possibly mahogany, that is shaped to support the configuration of the eagle’s body. The Eagle’s legs fit into carved holes at the top of the base. It is difficult to identity the wood out of which the Eagle itself is carved. Overall, the piece is carefully thought out, even extending to the character of the Eagle, who conveys a strong sense of rectitude and severity.
Regarding the age of the piece, it is likely from the early or mid 20th century, although it could be earlier. We acquired it more than 40 years ago and have had it ever since. It enhances a Folk Art collection and also complements contemporary or mid-century furnishings.
Dimensions of overall piece including base: 11 in High; 4 in Wide; 7 in Depth (from tip of tail to front of base)
Dimensions of base: 5 in Wide; 3.25 in High less
