Your eyes have already told you what a fabulous pair of wall sconces we have here! VERY solid brass throughout, which translates as HEAVY. You know, standard French manufacture from the 20s or 30s. Outclassing all others…
The design is indicative of the Art Deco period, with pyramiding elements and lots of geometry. The glass discs? Oooh-la-la!
The capa shell shades are just one way of shading these sconces, and didn’t come with these backs originally. If you don’t like them you can always buy a pair of ready-made clip-on (to the bulb) shades or have something really special custom-made. I like the color of these, which works nicely with the brass.
The wiring is original and in perfect working condition. The original bayonet mounting sockets are still installed and also in perfect working condition. Since you can easily buy a wide variety of bayonet-mounting bulbs over the Internet, for American voltage, why go through all the work (and it’s plenty) to change them out for American sockets? Accompanying your purchase will be 2 adapters which, when inserted into the bayonet sockets, allow the use of American candelabra-based bulbs, which you can get at any hardware store. So, if you're uncomfortable about acquiring or using bayonet-mounting bulbs, that's just been resolved for you!
As you can see from the photo of the back of one sconce, the French wall mounting apparatus, a single bar across the back, follows the “simplicity” rule of thumb. Gravity holds them onto whatever you or your electrician install to hang them on. This is not rocket science.
The glass discs have a few small chips on them, and as you can see from the photos, these don’t “jump out” at the viewer. The finish over the brass (lacquer) is somewhat compromised here and there, but again, you can see how well they present from the photos.
Truly a “stunning” design, sure to elicit plenty of complimentary response!
Measurements: about 11 inches high, 3 3/4 across (the shades). These project about 6 ½ inches from the wall. less
