The charm of kimono and obi is timeless. There were many rules to wear kimono as a garment. But taking them into our life now, there is no rule. With your artistic flair, they become alive again, as a garment or an interior decor to brighten up the corner of your home.
Silk Obi-Double sided-Maru-style depicting traditional Heian-period objects and people:
Tebako box: Boxes of this shape were used as early as the twelfth century to hold personal accessories such as combs. From the seventeenth century onward, groups of such boxes were part of the extensive sets of lacquered furnishings found in the trousseau of the elite and of the expanding merchant class.
Goshoguruma (Imperial cart): In ancient and medieval Kyoto, the imperial family and nobility rode in carriages drawn by oxen.
Obi is detailed woven including gold-foil thread. Please see all photos attached.
Measurements: approx. 14ft long (4 meters); 12.5 inches wide (32 cm).
Provenance: private collection in Fukuoka Japan.
Condition: excellent for its age (date: 1935-1949). Very minimal folding lines due to past hikinuki-knot style tie.
This is a collectors’ item, authentic and unique. Many different factors determine prices. First: age, rarity, and condition. Second: aesthetics. Since in Japan the best kimono and obi have always been considered textile art, prices can vary as much as do prices on paintings. Thus, beautiful, rare and vintage kimono command a premium.
