An exquisite full-length antique French Louis XVI style silver gilt trumeau mirror with an ornately carved central heraldic and crested shell motif, acanthus leaves, C-swirls, rocaille carvings, fluted columns with intertwined foliate vines above a substantial mirror.
In architecture, a trumeau is the central pillar supporting a large doorway, which, in medieval buildings, was often sculpted. In 17th and 18th century France, wood framed mirrors with large painted or heavily-carved sections, were set into paneling between windows and doors and above mantles, and the name “trumeau mirror” stuck. In subsequent generations, trumeau mirrors gained popularity with the rising moneyed class looking to emulate the wall-paneled aristocracy of yore or to preserve some vestige of the past.
