Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, painting on the opposite side of a glass pane requires the artist to work in reverse. In this case, the woman's delicate features and the intricate patterning of their robes were painted first, followed by the background and coloring. Special care was taken to include flowering grasses in the dresses and chrysanthemums in the woman's hair.
