A delicate wall screen or partition in red and black lacquer with gilt trim and latticework in classic geometric patterns. In the center of the fretwork is an elaborate gilt carving of a phoenix standing akimbo depicted in an intricate floral design.
Latticework is a hallmark of classic Chinese architectural ornamentation. Its use in Chinese architecture is a centuries-old art form dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1644) with far-reaching influence on Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese latticework on doors, partitions, and windows was mostly derived from traditional designs with auspicious meanings symbolizing longevity, health, or wealth.
In Chinese culture, the phoenix is legendary as the most venerated of all feathered creatures, the auspicious bird rising from the ashes. They are mythological birds that reign over all others, and often depicted as a composite of other birds. When depicted with a dragon, in Feng Shui they symbolize a perfect couple, love and marital bliss.
In Chinese mythology, the setting and posture in which creatures are depicted is also important. The phoenix at the center of the fretwork in this wall screen, which has the legs of a crane, is shown with its wings outstretched and one leg raised, a traditional symbol of longevity.
