June Felter was a figurative painter born in Oakland, California. She began as a commercial illustrator before and during World War II, but moved into fine art painting and drawing in the 1950s. She never moved from the Bay Area. She studied at the Oakland Art Institute from 1937-1940, California School of Arts and Crafts,1954-1958, and the San Francisco Art Institute from 1960-1961.
Felter was influenced by artists of the Bay Area figurative movement, especially Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and David Park. Her paintings and prints represent her everyday life; figures and still-lifes are the subject matter. A class at the San Francisco Art Institute taught by Richard Diebenkorn in 1960 furthered Felter’s practice of figurative style. In her landscapes, nudes and complex still-lifes, June’s work was appreciated for its graceful spontaneity.
For over 30 years she taught and exhibited her art throughout the Bay Area.
Her work has been shown in galleries and museums in the U.S and abroad, and is in private and museum collections, including the National Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Oakland and San Jose Museums. less
