The players robes glow with deep turquoise to royal blues, purple and pink. The background is the same coloring muted and dissolving into puce and gray. The painting has great charm. It is executed on linen which is backed by board. It is framed by an off white linen mat. The wood frame is a weathered gray with a raised black border on the inside. It is signed "H. Elsas".
The artist, Heinz (Harry) Hugo Erich Elsas (1925 Germany - 1994 Brazil) moved to Brazil with his family in 1936 to escape Nazi persecution in Germany. The family settled in Sao Paulo. At the age of 20 Elsas had his first individual exhibition. In the late 40s and early 50s he lived in Northeast Brazil which had a profound effect on his work. He participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions including the House Gallery, NYC and the Astreia, Grossman and House Galleries in Sao Paulo. Elsas work was shaped by the political conflicts he came of age in. His ability to express emotion, telling a story within the story, gives his work amazing depth. less
