late 19th to early 20th century
A traditional shield from the Ifugao people of the northern Philippines, dating back to the late 19th to early 20th century CE.
This wooden shield, characterized by its rectangular shape with spikes at the top and bottom, served a practical and symbolic purpose in the Ifugao's headhunting practices.
The coffee-hued pigment and minimalist incised design reflect the aesthetic values of the Ifugao culture. The braided wicker bands and carved inset handle suggest functional use and a certain degree of craftsmanship.
Headhunting was integral to the Ifugao's traditional way of life before outside influences, particularly during the American occupation in World War II, and the beginning to change their cultural practices. The shield would have been a critical part of their arsenal, not only for protection in battle but also as a symbol of the warrior's status and achievements within the community.
