One of my favorite paintings, this unsigned c.1825-35 portrait of a mourning mother with her child's portrait miniature worn over her heart is just stunning. Intimate interior, the artist ha shown her grief on her face, and within her surroundings and furnishings of her home. In her hand rests another object which was often a mourning icon, an elongated small box made of ivory (see final group images to see the type) which usually had an inset of plaited hair on top. So beautifully composed, this artist has left not just a glimpse of a woman, of a room, but also of an emotion. The painting is a watercolor or gouache on card. In our photos and for shipment it is without a cover glass. Typically watercolor or gouache paintings should have a cover glass, so we would advise her next owner to protect the painting in that way. The painting is as close to perfect and has no flaws. I'm quite sure it would have been protected by glass. We won't replace it both for the weight for shipping and for the danger of a cover glass on a larger painting possibly breaking, damaging the painting during shipment. I found her in France. See less
