In the past this has been a principle or test piece for a larger whole of an image or something similar. At the back you can still see a piece of metal that once grew into the tree. This comes from a large collection of a Dutchman who bought it from an artist in France in the 1970s. This artist's studio was full of wooden heads, busts and statues. Some religious and some not. The statues were most likely made from around 1900 to about the 1950s or 1960s. The head has become beautifully weathered over the years. A beautiful object to decorate your living or work space.
