cassandre is renowned for its original posters which today fetch record sums for posters from this era. He became interested in bauhaus very early on and trained at the académie julian with lucien simon. He is the creator of several typographic fonts alongside the deberny & peignot foundries such as bifur or peignot.
cassandre is particularly known for its art deco posters like ours, but especially for those illustrating the "normandie" liner, the "l'étoile du nord" railway posters or even the "dubonnet" drinks. One of its best-known logos remains that of yves saint-laurent.
pierre bergé will also say about the artist:
“cassandre was the greatest, the best graphic designer of his time. The first thing we did, even before raising the funds or finding the collaborators, was to meet him. He had designed the christian dior logo, it was forgotten. It was in 1961. He made us only one proposal, that of intertwined initials; the meeting took place at the restaurant le débarcadère, in paris. »
- pierre bergé, co-founder of yves saint laurent on the creation of the designer's logo for the newspaper le monde in 2005 -
blaise cendrars also says of cassandre that he is “the first director of the street”.
the artist himself evokes a deeper reflection of his work regarding the poster, which goes beyond simple advertising and is rather a transmitter:
“the poster demands complete renunciation from the painter. He cannot express himself in her; even if he could, he would not have the right to do so. Painting is a goal in itself. The poster is only a means of communication between the trader and the public, something like the telegraph. The poster artist plays the role of the telegraph operator: he does not send messages, he transmits them. We do not ask him for his opinion, we ask him to establish clear, powerful, precise communication\. A poster must contain within itself the solution of three problems: optical, graphic, poetic. »
- cassandre in notes, 1935 -
“i hoped to find in industry this life that i could no longer find in the cemeteries of art dealers. »
