In the late 1800s through early 1900s a revival of the low back Philadelphia Windsor that was made during the years 1725-1760.
The chair was used extensively in the quarters of the volunteer fire companies of the time. Back legs being shorter allowed for putting your feet up by the fire. Therefore it got dubbed as a Firehouse Windsor. Early examples are characterized by a heavy U-shaped continuous arm that terminated in round ends. The arms were supported by simple turned spindles, usually a minimum of seven to nine. The seat was U-shaped like the arm and sometimes slightly saddled. The front legs were ring turned and tapered with a moderate splay. The rear ones were plain and shorter. Legs were braced by plain stretchers except the front and they were ring turned.
The ends of the arms rest on a turned spindle that is fastened into the seat, which has minor saddling. A charming piece of Americana. less
