About the Artist:
Don Spencer, son of May Hoard Spencer, who was born in Manhattan Beach in 1936 and is also an artist. Don Spencer was born in 1934. According to Spencer, his parents were married in 1925. His mother was a commercial artist who studied at the Chouinard art school and also created fashion illustrations for Bullocks, May Company and Broadway department stores. In 1930 they bought some property in Manhattan Beach, CA and "my dad liked to build things so he would build houses,” Spencer said. They built the house they were living in when I was born up in the El Porto area just north of Rosecrans. They sold that house and built one next to it, the house I was raised in up on Crest Drive.” While his father Frank worked at Standard Oil full time and built a number of homes in Manhattan Beach, some that still exist, May continued working freelance while raising a family. "Mom was always in demand as a commercial artist,” Spencer said. During the 1930s when a lot of people had trouble making money, she easily made money. My dad just had a great attitude, great energy and they loved life. They built and created things.” Over the decades, Spencer continued both his parents' passions. He currently lives in a house that he built, which happens to be next door to one of the homes his father constructed. less
