POMPEIAN
Etchings from the end of the 18th century, finely painted in watercolor and black tempera.
Inspired by the frescoes found in the Pompeian domus, the scenes depicted recall daily life and the warrior world, recalling the classic style and elegance of the red and black figures of Greco-Roman ceramics.
The first image presents a scene of ablution or preparation for a rite, a frequent theme in the baths and lararia of Pompeian homes. The second illustration, however, depicts two hoplites in a duel, reminiscent of representations of gladiatorial combat or the celebration of military valor in Roman art.
Enhanced by black briar veneered frames and a red passepartout, typical shades of Pompeian art, used in wall decorations to enhance the figures and give depth to the scenes.
First painting dimensions: 51 x 42 cm
Second painting dimensions: 53 x 43 cm
